Tilley Airflow - Staying on my head, July 30, 2006

After a visit or two to the dermatologist where I had some "suspicious skin cells" removed from my upper back, it was time to change my methods of sun protection. I have been wearing a baseball type cap since 1988 when I play golf or go to the beach but wanted to go to a hat with a full brim.

I decided to try a Tilley hat after doing some research about hats on the internet. I choose to go with the model number LTM5 Airflow Cooler Hat. It is made out of nylon and has a vented area around the top of the crown. I have been wearing it to play golf for about 6 rounds now as well as when I take the dog for a walk around noontime each day.

The LTM5 works as advertised. It provides 100% UV protection. The brim provides enough shade for the face, ears and back of the neck. While the nylon material does not breath, the vent around the top of the crown does a good job of keeing the top of the head cool. However, my brow sweats a little more than with a cotton... The Tilly Airflo hat is the perfect all-purpose hat; it always looks good no matter how mashed and crunched in a suitcase (it springs right back) and it
contains a pocket for carrying identification and a little cash. It has adjustable strings for keeping it from flying away, and which tuck away when not needed. Also washable and quick drying. Get this: when/if it wears out, you can get a new one free if you register it. I have two and carry them everywhere. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

I bought the LTM6 Tilley AIRFLO hat for my husband on his birthday. It is a great looking hat- makes him look like a real mountain man. When we went to go visit his extended family, everybody tried it on and I genuinely thought that it looked good on everyone. All the relatives want Tilleys now! I can't blame them.

We measured my husband's head according to the instructions on the Tilley website and the hat fits him perfectly. Even walking around in the windy Badlands the hat stayed put. Despite the AIRFLO vents, the hat kept his head (and mine too- I like to borrow it!) very dry during a weekend of rainy camping. The Tilley is absolutely everything a hat should be plus some. We love the Tilley!!!

Wow! I am not a hat person, but age and sanity have forced me to wear something. I had previously never liked any hat as the fit was rarely comfortable or the hat was in the way of my bird photography. So I tried a Tilley LTM6. Again, WOW! The fit is perfect, the comfort is remarkable, it will never wear out (and it will be replaced by Tilley if it does). I washed it twice already and the fit is still the same as when it was new. My wife has to make me take it off in the house. She also claims it makes me look like someone out of GQ--I think this is goodness. I can strongly recommend this hat to anyone!!

I bought my LTM6 two years ago and it's perfect under most conditions. I like the protection it gives, the light weight, the option of using none, one, or both of the fore and aft wind cords; the overall comfort of the hat and the cords, and the easy care. When it's hot, however - think in terms of the summer heat in SoCal from Escondido to San Ysidro, Tucson, AZ; White Sands, NM; Texas and Oklahoma - perspiration soaks the sweat band and the hat gradually shrinks causing the familiar hat-headache that causes many people to buy a Tilley in the first place. The problem is alleviated temporarily until it shrinks again, IF one thinks to remove the hat and stretch it. Also, water condensation builds up inside the hat because the Airflo band isn't wide enough and the Nylamtium material doesn't breathe. Again, this is only during hot weather. Other than that, I like my Tilley so much that I'm looking to buy another to wear during hot weather such as the LTM8 that has the full mesh sides.

I received one of these as a gift. I spend most of my freetime outdoors, so the gift was pretty thoughtful and appreciated.

This hat is amazing. Actually feels sturdy, odd to say about a hat, but that seems to describe it well. Extremely comfortable and easy to wear. In the hand, it is heavy and solid, but when worn it is barely noticable. I typically wear 7 1/2 or 7 5/8 in fitted hats. The 7 5/8 fit me perfectly.

I will admit, the style isnt really me. Im more of a baseball hat or wool watch cap kind of guy, but now that I have this I use it. Nothing beats this hat when the sun's beating down on your head or the rain is coming down. It is ventilated just right so your head doesnt get too hot, but is still plenty sturdy enough to keep the sun or rain off your head, neck, and face.

Now that Ive been using it a bit, its starting to get that cool 'worn in' look. I think thats one of the cooler things about this hat, Id compare it to a leather... Read more

I love this hat. It is a good design, well made, and durable. If I ever lose it I will get another. The catch is that it really isn't water resistant. It isn't 'waxed cotton' in any sense of the term. Depending where you look the manufacturer says that when the hat loses water resistance to rejuvenate it by putting it in the clothes dryer, or, by spraying the hat it with water-repelling chemicals used for clothing. For me, right out of the box, the hat soaked up water just like any cotton does. So after awhile I treated it with the very oilskin wax that the product description scoffs at ("...no more wax transfer, 'sticky hand' or strong waxy odor..."). I used a traditional reproofing wax sold by 'Filson'. I'd bet that any oilskin reproofing wax would be similar. These oilskin reproofing waxes are the traditional way of waterproofing cloth - and they work quite well. Yes, it is a bit of effort and mess to apply. We do quite a lot of vacationing that takes us to sunny, rainy, tropics and the Tilley hat has been a great value. ***Make sure you follow the sizing guidelines!***
This hat needs to fit loose, should sit with the crown down on your head but not so loose as to slide around. Try on a sized hat and be able to get a finger or two inside the headband. This will give you the correct Tilley size. The chin/head straps brilliantly hold it on in windy conditions. It floats and has a "secret" pocket in the crown for ID's, room keys, money.
